Andrew Jackson did not have any children of his own.

He adopted one of the twin nephews of his wife, Rachel, for reasons that remain unclear. This son, Andrew Jackson, Jr(1808-1865) , became the heir of the Jackson estate. Andrew Jackson, Jr. would eventually sell the Hermitage to the State of Tennessee to pay off huge debts he had incurred. He continued to live there, rent free, until his death in 1865. His wife, Sarah Yorke , continued to live at the Hermitage until her death in 1888.

The Jackson's also adopted a young Creek (Native American) boy, Lincoya, whose parents had been killed by Jackson's troops in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Lincoya died at the age of 16 of tuberculosis just a few months before his father was elected as president.

The Jacksons had three children, all adopted.

Andrew Jackson Jr was born to Andrew Jackson's brother Severn and Severn Jackson's wife, Elizabeth Rucker Donelson, but his twin brother, Thomas Jefferson Donelson, remained with his natural parents. On the frontier battlefield, Andrew Jackson found a young Indian boy whose parents had been killed, and had the child delivered to his home, where he was named Lyncoya and raised as a son. Another child, Andrew Jackson Hutchings, the orphaned grand niece of Rachel Jackson, was taken in and raised by the Jacksons from the age of five.

The Jacksons also served as guardians for several other children, which under the customs of the day meant that the Jacksons provided for the financial welfare of these children, who were mostly cousins, nieces, and nephews, but they did not live with the Jacksons. One nephew who did live with them was Andrew Jackson Donelson, later to be Millard Fillmore's running mate on the American Party ticket in 1856

Andrew Jackson had 2 wifes and 10 children. 8 out of the 10 children were relatives such as nieces that had been taken care of by Andrew because of parental deaths.

Jackson had two adopted sons, Andrew Jackson Jr., the son of Rachel's brother Severn Donelson, and Lyncoya, a Creek Indian orphan adopted by Jackson after the Creek War. Jackson had planned to have Lyncoya educated at West Point, but he died of tuberculosis in 1828, at the age of sixteen.

The Jacksons also acted as guardians for eight other children. John Samuel Donelson, Daniel Smith Donelson and Andrew Jackson Donelson were the sons of Rachel's brother Samuel Donelson, who died in 1804. Andrew Jackson Hutchings was Rachel's orphaned grand nephew. Caroline Butler, Eliza Butler, Edward Butler, and Anthony Butler were the orphaned children of Edward Butler, a family friend. They came to live with the Jacksons after the death of their father.

Andrew Jackson was married to Rachel Donelson in 1791, but it was later shown that she was still married to her previous husband. The married again, legally, in 1794.

Andrew Jackson had three adopted sons; Theodore, Andrew Jackson Jr., and Lyncoya. Upon his death he left his estate to Andrew Jackson Jr. (with the exception of a few items given specifically to other family and freinds).

He also had guardianship of several other children; John Samuel Donelson, Daniel Smith Donelson, Andrew Jackson Donelson, Andrew Jackson Hutchings, Caroline Butler, Eliza Butler, Edward Butler, and Anthony Butler.
