Many people think that the ninja were similar to cat-burglars of assassins. THis is true, in a sense. Ninja were mercenaries. THey would be hired by different daimyo, to sabotage, spy, or (rarely), assassinate a rival. An easier way to think about it is that the ninja would do whatever was considered dishonorable by the samurai. THe ninja thrived in the Sengoku Jidai (era of warring states).
