Genesis:41:50-52:
50: And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On bare unto him.
51: And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house.
52: And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.

Ephraim was the second son of Joseph (Joseph the one who lived in Egypt) by Asenath, the daughter of Potpherah (Genesis 46:20). His descendants became the tribe of Ephraim and when the Ten Tribes separated from the other two (Judah and Benjamin) Ephraim became the mainstay of the Northern Kingdom (Ten Tribes) and that kingdom was at times known as "Ephraim"

According to the Hebrew Bible, the Tribe of Ephraim was one of the Tribes of Israel. The Tribe of Manasseh together with Ephraim also formed the House of Joseph. As part of the Kingdom of Israel, the territory of Ephraim was conquered by the Assyrians, and the tribe exiled; the manner of their exile led to their further history being lost.
