Both were similar that they were both outcasts from typical conventions and styles.However rock n roll musicians of the 50`s were more in line with the mainstream world at that time other than their music. They still dressed nice and were clean cut.The beat poets on the other hand had a more anything goes attitude and some grew beards and kept quite unkempt appearances.
KISS contributed a new level of theatricality to a rock & roll performance. As musicians they cannot be put on the same level as the truly seminal groups such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, or the Who, but they did do some nice work, nonetheless. The did a beautiful cover version of "God Gave Rock & Roll To You" which was used to excellent effect in the movie "Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure" as a symbol of the tremendous spiritual power of rock & roll. Even if for nothing else, KISS would deserve to be remembered for that.
