The Native American groups known to English language-speakers as Arapaho, Crow, Lahota, and Shoshone are the first known settlers of what is now Wyoming. The first evidence of inhabitants of Wyoming show they probably arrived about 11,500 B.C. through the Bering Straight, possibly part of the Clovis culture.

Then the Shoshone, Arapaho, Cheyenne and Crow lived in the eastern portion of the area with the Ute in the western portion.

Then came the fur traders and trappers, mostly French or French Canadian.
