General Gates actually led his army only during the last phase of the campaign that is after the second battle of Freeman's farm, when the defeated

British were withdrawing northward towards Saratoga, where they surrendered on Friday, October 1777.

This astonishing outcome must however be credited to the work personally developed by general Benedict Arnold during the first and second battle of Freeman's Farm (September 19 and October 7, 1777) which saw respectively the weakening and the decisive defeat of Burgoyne's army by the left wing of Patriot army.
