∙ 11y agoDemocratic Governor Samuel J. Tilden of New York lost the U.S. Presidential Election of 1876 in February 1877.
It was the most controversial Presidential election in U.S. history. Although three southern states each had two contradicting sets of election results, one showing Hayes as the winner and the other showing Tilden as the winner, all of the votes from those three states were given to Hayes, which made him the winner by one vote. Gov. Tilden is the only person who ever lost a U.S. Presidential election with more than 50% of the popular votes.
