Persia sent a punitive expedition against Athens in 490 BCE in retaliation for Athens participating in the revolt by the Greeks in Asia Minor against Persian rule. Athens defeated the attack at Marathon.
Athens was later a member of the Greek coalition led by Sparta which repelled a full-scale invasion of Peninsular Greece in 480-479 BCE.
The Persians
When and where?
The Ionian War 499-493 was won by the Persian Empire.
180,000 Persians won. This took place in the battle of Thermopylae. Leonidas and his army of 6,000 to 7,000 Spartans but were delayed by the Persians when a Greek traitor showed the Persians how to attack from both sides. Leonidas commanded all of his soldiers to escape except for 300 Spartans.
Spartans were known as the ultimate militia at there time during a Persian attack that was known to be the best. 200 Spartans fighting half a million Persians. And I believe that the Spartans won.
No. Both were of Indo-European ethnic origin, but the Spartans were Dorian Greeks and the Persians were Iranians.
