Unlike in America today, being considered a "middle class" individual during the time of the Industrial Revolution did not necessarily mean earning an "average" income. The middle class consisted of educated professionals, including bankers, lawyers, architects, and doctors. Breaking into this level of society was not easy, as some form of credential was usually needed, as well as money and aggressiveness. These people dominated the social order from the mid-18th century until the early 20th century, and largely controlled the wealth of Western Europe and the United States.

If you are asking about the middle ages there wasn't one. There was no industry ( this didn't develop until the late 1800's) and there was no middle class.
