Beethoven began writing music at a very young age, but his first public renown was as a virtuoso pianist, known for his genius at improvisation. His early piano music was intended for his own performance. This includes his first sonatas, including the Pathetique, the early chamber works and the first two piano concerti. As time went on he wrote some music for commissions or as gifts to friends, such as the piano piece Für Elise. In later years he wrote ideally, without any particular artist in mind.
