Ezekiel, which means 'God is strong,' was taken as part of the 2nd Babylonian deportation of about 10,000 Judeans to the River Chebar, which some scholars believe is 'naru kaban' or the grand canal that connected both sides of the river Euphrates. This is dated to King Jehoiachin (Jeconiah) (597 BC).
At that time, Ezekiel was married, which his wife soon passed, and lived in a house - living more like a 'colonist' than a slave. Many Jewish Elders would come to consult with him. Somewhere around his 30th birthday Ezekiel had his calling - a time when God called those into his priestly/prophetic roles. Ezekiel tells us this calling for him was on the 5th day of 593 BC. He writings included 13 prophecies of Jeconiah's period - circa 593-571 BC.
Ezekiel was a contemporary of Jeremiah who was 600 miles away in Jerusalem and giving warning to the peoples there. Ezekiel is often called the 'Watchman' for God's people (see Ezekiel 3; 33) and for the entire 'House of Israel' mentioned 78 times in his book - both many of Judah already in Babylonian captivity with him and metaphorically through his book for the Lost 10 Tribes of Israel and their progeny.
Ezekiel was a priest in the temple at Jerusalem towards the end of the monarchy in Judah, and was then deported to Babylon, where he wrote his book and preached to the exiled Jews. Daniel I. Block (The Book of Ezekiel), says that no other prophet is so creative in the presentation of his message, and none is as forceful. His use of extreme pornography, and of images of death and destruction, are part of his overtly forceful style. Much of his vocabulary, especially in chapters 16 and 23, has been toned down in English translations.
Ezekiel is never mentioned elsewhere in the Old Testament, leading to some debate as to whether his name was a pseudonym, perhaps for a slightly later author, but this view does not have strong support.
