Although they describe Jesus as being born of a virgin mother and therefore had no earthly father, the Gospels of Matthew and Luke also provide geneaologies to show that Jesus was descended through his father Joseph from the family lines of both Zorobabel and King David. Matthew says that Joseph's father was called Jacob and that he was descended from the last of the Davidic kings. Luke says that Joseph's father was called Heli and that he was descended from commoners all the way back to Nathan, son of David. Raymond E Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says that neither genealogy is likely to be strictly true.
