It was commissioned by the French Cardinal in Rome to decorate his tomb. But when it was finished it was considered a master piece and moved to The Chapel of the Pieta in the Vatican. I'm sorry but I can't remember the Cardinal's name.
The Medici family. It stood in front of their place in Florence, Italy. Today it is still there but that is a reproduction. The real one is in a museum in Florence. The smog and elements were causing damage to the marble so they had to move inside in controlled conditions.
