Frankfurt am Main = Frankfurt on the Main. The 'am' is short for 'an dem' = 'on the'. Main = the name of a river. I have not heard it abbreviated Frankfurt AM, normally Frankfurt/Main, or Frankfurt(Main), or FFM, or FRA, but I guess it could be abbreviated like that.
