Africa was called the dark continent because nobody knew what was inside it. The only people who had explored it were the portugals and they had only made contact with a few coastal villages. This was in the 1600's or so and when the 1800's and 1900's rolled around, people began to ponder over the vast land. This lead to the discovery of diamonds, ruby, etc and thus lead thus triggered the scramble for Africa.

∙ 15y agoBecause of its unexplored nature, like the saying goes "i am in the dark" it means that you dont know something. So the early explorers knew very little about the continent so they called it the dark continent.

∙ 11y agoAfrica is called the dark continent not because of the complextion of the original inhabitants no the absents of lights, primarily because most people knew very few about it. And also the knowledge of its interior was so very limited
