Why are Australia's sporting colors green and gold?

There are different theories on why green and gold were chosen as Australia's Olympic colours. The most prevailing belief is that they represent the colours of Australia's floral emblem, the Golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha).

The first Australian national sporting team to wear green and gold was the Australian cricket team when it toured England in 1899. It was the representation of "gum-tree green" and "wattle-gold".
