No they are not the smartest canine. They are smart and in the top of the list. But, the Border Collie has been proven the smartest of all canine breeds.

∙ 14y agoThey are the third smartest dogs of all breeds... in general, at least. Any dog can be smart. But shepherds are unique with a lot of personality... don't mistake me saying personality for spunk, because German shepherds can be extremely calm... in fact, most are very well mannered, handsome/beautiful, strong and most of all INCREDIBLY SMART.

∙ 12y agono not at all a doberman could crush a German shepherd because dobes are the second fastest breed of dog and has 1 of thew highest bite pressures. a doberman is the most reliable guard dog u can get a pitbull couldnot take a dober a doberman will kill the pitbull but the pitbull will do very serious injuries that u might even have to put the dober down
just a dobermann owner can know, how strong the dobermann really is.

It'd be impossible to say that for example border collies are smarter than german shepherds, because it honestly depends on the individual dog and whoever is making the comparison! I was just curious what the majority would say. I still say Boxer's should be up there at least in the top 20! I'm not really surprised by the lists, though. They're not TOO different from what I would've put. Minus the jack, boxer, and a couple others:)
I still say its all opinion, though, studies or not-I agree, it'd be really hard to test according to everyone's standards of 'smart'.
