Why are golden retrievers different colors?

Because God made different breeds of dogs to make it so there was more fun and choices with dogs! :D

My understanding is that humans are responsible for most if not all the different breeds of dogs. People intentionally bred dogs to get the traits they wanted.

If dogs were allowed to roam free and mate as they please, dogs would eventually all look very much alike.

Humans bred different types of dogs because dogs were used for different purposes. Some dogs, like Labradors, were bred to be able to retrieve things in water, others, like collie dogs and German Shepherd dogs, were bred to herd sheep, or like Rottweilers who were bred to herd bulls. Some dogs, like Pekinese, toy poms or many other small breeds were bred simply to keep people's feet warm or for companionship. Some dogs were bred for more sinister purposes, like Staffordshire bull terriers or Pit bull terriers who were bred for dog fighting puposes.

Dogs come in many more colors than black, brown and white - there are red, yellow, cream, tan, liver, and blue ticked dogs as well.

For fun, check out the American Kennel Club's online breed pictures, particularly the herding and sporting breeds to see the variation in color that is possible. Or you could just head down to your local dog shelter and see what's there.

And gray. If the red, yellow, cream, tan, and liver look like different shades of brown, black, and white to you, and I'm sure they might, try to think of any animal (mammals, I mean, not fish or birds) that are any other color. None, right? Green lions? Pink panthers? Blue antelopes? Not gonna happen, right? You can look up more information online under "Colors of animals." (Don't put in "animal color," you'll get coloring books!)The weird thing is that a lot of the colors we think we see in birds are not pigments, they're produced by the structure of the feathers!

They are bred that way. The golden can vary from a darker golden russet, almost like an Irish Setter, to a very light buff blond.
