It is probably instinctive.

The sight of a fire is strange as are the sounds and smells. They don't know what it is but the do know it can hurt them.

for lions fire represents the unknown, an element of nature which they are not familial with, which they fear and avoid as much possible as they can .lions may regard fire as a sign of presence of humans , in this case, it is preferable to live the area because of the risk of being chased by hunters , also lions may have learnt to fear fire after acknowledging it s incredible devastating power Whenever a fire breaks out in the woods

Yes. Probably since the beginning of human existance and is still in use for that purpose by people around the world. And not only to scare the big meat-eating ones but also the small biting ones that fly around, mosquitos. Mosquitos kill more people around the world every year than any other animal or insect, in this case.
