The fundamental importance of chromosomes is that they contain DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, the substance that contains every organism's genetic code.

When a cell divides, its chromosomes must first replicate. Cells divide in two basic ways – mitosis and meiosis. The latter type of division incorporates the former.

Chromosomes are structures found in the nucleus of our cells which contain our DNA. DNA codes for the production of all the proteins in our body which we need to have in order to survive. Without chromosomes, we could not live at all.

Chromosomes contain all of the DNA codons, or genes, for protein synthesis and for the inheritance of various genetic characteristics in the offspring. Since enzymes catalyse all of the metabolic reactions in the cell, and all enzymes are proteins, the genes determine whether or not the cells will be able to perform these life reactions normally, which is pretty important. Chromosomes contain all of the information for cell metabolism and for reproduction of cells in mitosis and meiosis.

There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in all body cells.(Except red blood cells, as they have no nucleus in them.) Each Chromosome is made of billions of base pairs, in double helical structure, made of phosphate and sugar in series, in what is called as in antiparallel direction. So there is (should be )single thread of DNA in each chromosome, highly folded, enveloped by a protein called His-tone. These long thread contains Genes in between them. This genes are unique to the species and carry ALL information about the individual.(Like there color, maximum height, color of eyes, color of hairs, his nature etc.) When sperms in males and ovum in women forms they have half the chromosomes in them. When they unite, then again 23 pairs of chromosomes are formed, giving a new born.

How many chromosomes do humans have in each of their reproductive cells why is it important?

In both an egg cell and a sperm cell, there are 23 chromosomes. The sperm and egg unite (fertilize) to create a zygote (fertilized egg). A zygote has 46 chromosomes. This is important because if a sperm and/or an egg cell have 1 more or 1 less chromosome, a mutation could form in the zygote.
