Spectacles predates glasses by about 200 years but essentially means the same thing. Spectacles comes from a word meaning "to observe" while glasses comes from what the spectacles were, and are, made from.

The lenses are called "corrective" because they improve vision by allowing the eye to focus properly. If you are asking why glasses are referred to by the seemingly technical term it is because it includes implanted, contact and eyeglass lenses.

It would also ruin this joke:

-A police officer is talking to a motorist he has pulled over-

  • Sir, your drivers license says you need to be wearing glasses.
  • Yes, officer, but I have contacts.
  • I don't care who you know, you still need to be wearing glasses to drive.
