Gorillas are mammals because they fulfil the definition of mammals:

  • live birth
  • suckle their young
  • warm-blooded
  • have fur
  • breathe with lungs

A gorilla belongs to the mamal family because it's young are born live, not as eggs to be hatched later as in the bird and reptile family. It also feeds its young with its mammalian glands, a gland exclucive to mamals.

The name is derived from the Greek Γόριλλαι (Gorillai) "Tribe of hairy women." Gorillas were first called such by missionary Thomas Savage and naturalist Jeffries Wyman. They originally named the Western Gorilla "Troglodytes gorilla," a name that was later changed to Gorilla gorilla. There is also a species named Gorilla berengei(Eastern gorilla), and five recognized subspecies.

A mammal will usually feed a rich nutritious milk to their young.
