The "inner planets" are called inner planets because they are relatively near to the Sun, in the inner part of the Solar System. They are also called the "rocky planets" because they are mainly made of rocks.

The "outer planets" are also called "gas giants" and are composed mostly of gases or liquefied gas.

There are four inner planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. There are also four outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The inner planets are spaced much closer to each other than the outer planets. The asteroid belt separates the inner planets form the outer planets.

They are called the inner planets because between Mars and Jupiter there is a asteroid belt dividing the the outer planets and inner planets

The inner planets are also know as the Rocky Planets and the Outer Planets are also known are Gas Giants

And historically its just because the inner planets are closer to the sun.
