pumpkins are used to either make pumpkin juice or pie! and they are also used at halloween. you empty the inside of the pumpkin then you carve a face on the out side and put a small candle inside so it lights up(:

Believe it or not, turnips were used for Jack-o'-Lanterns before pumpkins. When the tradition of the Jack-o'-Lantern went from Europe to the US, pumpkins were more readily available than turnips and were larger, allowing for easier carving. That's why the pumpkin is used today.

because they are delicious and easy to grow. They were one of several staple crops grown by native Americans prior to invasion by European settlers, and they make much better jack o lanterns than turnips.
