first answer: pets are easy for a first pet, but still have their own personalities. still a big responsibility though.

different answer: I disagree. It's a myth that rabbits are an easy pet, or a good "starter" pet for children (see my argument below).

People like rabbits because they are friendly, funny, clean, cute, and small. Rabbits have a great personality. They are very funny to see jumping around the room. They're also very social, and when they trust you they'll come right up and ask for cuddles.

Rabbits are a big responsibility and take a lot of work, and it can be very stressful and expensive when they get sick (because there aren't many vets around who can treat them, in comparison to cats and dogs), but it's all worthwhile because they have such great personalities, and so much love to give.

Many people say rabbits are aggressive and destructive. This is because they have unhealthy or unhappy rabbits. If you do your research, and learn how to take care of your rabbit properly (they have special needs, very different from cats/dogs), then your bunny will probably be a lot of fun!

Why Rabbits are NOT "Easy" Pets

First of all, pet rabbits live about 10 years or more. Some people who think rabbits are easy to take care of aren't actually taking good care of their rabbits, and that's why they die after 3 or 4 years.

Rabbits are just as much work and responsibility as a dog! It's true you don't have a walk a rabbit, but just like dogs, rabbits need love and affection every single day (they are social animals), and they need daily exercise.

It's true you don't have to bathe rabbits (in fact, you shouldn't: it can be very dangerous for them), but you do need to keep their cage clean (or pen or room or wherever you keep the bunny), including the litter box, and you need to groom them regularly (brushing, nail clipping, and more). Some rabbits are easy-going, but many rabbits struggle when you try to groom them: keeping them still without hurting them is not easy.

All animals try to act normal even when they're sick or injured, but rabbits are masters at this behaviour. Rabbits are prey animals, and this affects how they think and act: so, if you're a rabbit, the sooner you act sick, the sooner a hawk will single you out. This means by the time it's obvious your rabbit isn't well, it's too late -- and he or she has been suffering for days now (maybe even longer). If you have a bunny, you have to be knowledgeable about what to look for, and spend time observing the bunny's appearance and behaviour every single day: there's no way a child can take on this kind of responsibility alone, and it's unfair to expect them to.

Preparing for a rabbit takes all the work that preparing for a cat or dog does, plus more, because you have to "proof" all the places your bunny will be. There are lots of dangers in the home for a rabbit, such as electrical cords, the gears under a reclining sofa, poisonous house plants, and things to fall down from (rabbits are great climbers but they don't know how to fall or jump down from tall surfaces, and they end up hurt). There's also dangers outside, like poisonous garden plants, pests (bugs, parasites, etc.), predators (city and country animals), and hot/cold/wet weather. It takes time and planning to take care of all these things!
