Sediments or the sources of sediments can change from erosional factors and plate tectonics. The basement ignweous or metamorphic rock could have been uplifted by plate tectonics, then subsided, starting the deposition of sediments which became sedimentary rock.

Sedimentary rock is formed over millions of years by the accumulation of certain substances. Sandstone is formed from grains of weathered rock, limestone is formed from the skeletal remains of minute sea creatures, slate is formed from finer muds and clays. Whichever substance formed the layers, put under immense pressure over a very long time, they harden into rock. Upheaval of the sedimentary rock often lifted the layers up from the sea floor and onto land.
