Why are skin cells grown artificially?

Artificial skin is a synthetic covering grown in laboratories with two layers used experimentally to treat burn victims. Artificial skin works by removing burn-damaged skin, and then surgeons blanket a wound with a covering, and then apply a skin graft on top of this bio-material to encourage the growth of new skin to close the wound.

Research in progress at the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) is focused on artificial cells as a means to deliver medicine in outer space; these cells are able to withstand dehydration and thus can be safely stored for long periods. Artificial cells are made of a polymer that acts like a cell membrane, but the polymer is stronger and more manageable than real membranes. These polymers are called polymersomes and can be made to cross-link with other polymers. Researchers feel that many different kinds of molecules can be encapsulated within these polymersomes and then delivered to specific target organs. An example would be an artificial blood cell that not only delivers oxygen but also medication as it travels through the body.

If a person has extensive 2nd and/or third degree burns, they will need skin grafts. Artificially grown skin from their own skin cells will be needed to cover the lost skin area. Skin grafts from another person doesn't work well especially if the area is very large.
