The temperature of a current depends on were it comes from for example the California current is cold (even though California is hot) the cold water is coming from Alaska. Britain is warmed due to the gulf stream flowing into the north Atlantic drift and towards Europe. This explains why Britain is significantly warmer then Quebec and Labrador, CAN even though they are at the same latitude.

How can ocean current affect the temperature and the amount of moisture of the air mass above the current and above nearby coastlines?

Warm currents bring warm temperatures to the poles, and cold currents bring cold temperatures to the equator to become warm again. Once warm, they return to the poles again. This process repeats in some currents forever. Most currents are circular.

What do ocean currents have to do with climate?

Ocean currents affect climate because they are able to change the temperature of the shores where the currents move to. Warm currents are able to prevent ice formation on some shores and beach lines. This gives the area relatively warmer temperatures throughout the year. The Gulf Stream (a warm current from Mexico to Europe) keeps Western Europe much warmer than the corresponding latitudes in North America. Ocean currents can have a great affect on the neighboring regions. These currents bring temperature and weather changes to these areas. Deep ocean currents changes the temperature and salinity. With the temperature changing, it affects climate.

Why are same planet hot and other are cold?

Some planets are cold whereas the others are hot depending with the distances from the sun.

Where does the water go after it get to the equator?

If you look at a map of ocean currents, you'll note that water does not remain in one place. That is, it doesn't go to the equator and remain there. Ocean surface currents tend to swirl, so upon reaching the equator, the currents will bring the waters in a full circle and repeat the process. Additionally, water has a tendency to evaporate, even frozen water--ask the Inuit what a Chinook is (hint: it isn't a fish, or a large, flying brick the US Army uses for troop and equipment transport). Also, ocean currents move in many different directions, the ocean being a three dimensional space, some of the water moves to different levels.

Why do some underwater earthquakes cause tsunamis and others don't?

they make the bottom of the ocean explode

Are warm or cold ocean currents stronger?

some are- like the gulf stream and rip currents. but others are not strong. it depends on the location and other variables.

How do ocean currents affect air temperature in coastal areas?

Warm Ocean currents warms the air above it and some move from the tropic towards both poles ---------------------------------------------------------AND----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cold Ocean currents also affect weather patterns by bringing cold water from polar to the equator

How do the ocean currents affect the Atacama Desert?

The cold Humboldt Current gives the Atacama Desert its cool, mild climate. Fog formed because of the cold waters provides moisture that some plants and animals need to survive. It is also partially responsible for the extreme lack of rainfall in the desert.

Why are some currents cold and some warm?

What are some ways that ocean currents and wind are similar?

They are similar because if you think about it carefully, the ocean currents are caused by the air currents and the air currents are caused by the ocean currents, so, it is all a scientific cycle.

Why is the sun's energy needed for ocean currents to occur?

Some parts of the ocean are heated more than others.

Why are there hot and cold deserts?

Generally, deserts located furthest from the tropics are cold deserts. The closer to the tropics, the warmer the desert. Some are considered cold because they are at a higher altitude and others considered as cool desert because they are on a coastline that has cold ocean currents just off shore

How is carbon cycled from intermediate ocean depths?

Carbon is dissolved in the cold ocean waters found at high latitudes. The cold water sinks and moves slowly in trhe deep ocean currents toward the tropics. In the warm tropics, the water rises as it is warmed, mixing with water at intermediate levels and at the surface. Some carbon dioxide is released to the tropical atmosphere as ocean currents carry the warmed water back toward polar areas

How does ocean life affect ocean currents?

It's more likely the other way around. Ocean currents affect ocean life. Perhaps in a subtle way, since all life on the planet affects the atmosphere, especially the algae in the oceans releasing oxygen, that ocean life affects the weather, which in turn affects the ocean currents. It's also possible that some "seaweed forests" slow the movement of currents.

Why does a cold desert receive low rainfall?

All deserts, hot or cold, receive low rainfall. It is due to the geographic location of the particular desert. Some are located in mountain shadows, some are in areas with sinking air, some are along coastal areas with cold ocean currents. Some combine more than one of these features.
