Originally they were called "strewberries," because they were "strewn" across the ground. ("Strewn" means thrown about.) The name eventually evolved into "strawberries."

Also, when strawberries are growing, some people put straws around them to stop the slugs from eating the strawberries. Also, when it is winter and no strawberries are growing, people put straws over the top of the strawberry plants.
