The elements are put in order by atomic number (the number of protons in the nucleus) from least to greatest, and follow an observed pattern in atomic properties. As you follow a row (period) from right to left, the atomic properties slowly change from that of an Alkali Metal to that of a Noble Gas. This pattern is what makes up the periods on the Periodic Table. However, as we move along, there are sudden changes in atomic properties, from a Noble gas back to that of an Alkali Metal at the beginning of the period, and then the pattern starts over, slowly moving back towards the noble gasses at the end of each period. So, the rows are the pattern, shifting from Alkali to Noble, and each column is the group of all elements with certain properties (such as all Alkalis on the left, or all Noble gasses on the far right).
