== == The four gospels (and a little part of Acts) are the only writings in the New Testament that describe the life and mission of Jesus. Without them, Christians would not be sure who Jesus was, or when he lived. == == Paul, in his epistles, never acknowledged that Jesus was a person who lived in the recent past, and even regarded the resurrection as spiritual. In the same vein, Hebrewstalks of Jesus as the high priest in heaven. The Didache(Teachings of the Apostles), an important early Christian writing, provides detailed instructions about the eucharist but, paradoxically, does not associate it with the death of Jesus. Outside the gospels, there is little in the New Testament to really tell us about the foundation events important to Christianity. So, the gospels have an important place because they define what modern Christianity is all about. The gospels, as the above states, are the only reliable records we have of the life of Jesus either written by eyewitnesses (Matthew, John) or by those who knew eyewitnesses (Mark, Luke). Without these the only other records would be the writings of Paul who speaks of this 'Jesus Christ' from which we can glean quite a bit of information but not as much as the gospels, or the more scant writings of contemporary historians like Pliny, Josephus or Tacitus, or the oral tradition handed down by the disciples through their own followers (eg John and his own follower Polycarp).
The Gospels are at the heart of The Bible because that is what the whole Bible is about.
Old Testament - Before the Gospel
The Old Testament was preparing for the Gospel. It was given so mankind could see, hey this is the law, and I don't measure, there has got to be a better way.
The Gospels
Then Jesus came and you will see in Gospel of John that John writes Jesus is better than the old way, Jesus is better than everything.
Epistles - After the Gospel
Then those affected by the Gospel like Paul, wrote about what you have to do know that you know that ergo the rest of the New Testament. Paul spends lots of time writing and correcting those that tried to do the Old in the New and Paul continually says not its not that way, its this way.
The word "gospel" actually means "good news", refering to the bringing of good news about Jesus Christ coming to save us. The four gospels are together in the new testament because they tell the story of Jesus coming with great news about him being our savior. They could not have been in the old testament because Jesus had not come yet.
The gospels are the heart of scripture, because all of Scripture testifies to Christ. I think of it this way, the Old Testament sets the stage for the gospels, revealing God's character, our sin nature, and pre-figuring Christ's redemptive work. The rest of the new Testament (Acts, the epistles, Revelation, etc.) explain the implications of the Gospels. Jesus said that all Scripture testifies to Him (John 5:39), Scripture is one great story, with one great hero and His name is Jesus
The entire word of God is important (all Scripture). The Gospel accounts reflect the Word becoming flesh among us - God with mankind. His perfect example and sinless life were vital for the salvation of all if they repent.
Gospels are the books that some of the disciples- followers of Jesus wrote. They are significant because try accurately tell of jesus' life and death. The gospels in the bible are: Mathew, Mark, Luke and John
He wrote one of the Gospels and the best version of the Sermon on the Mount is in his book.
