The Great Lakes are important because together they are the largest body of freshwater in the world and they tend to reduce transportation costs in the heartland of North America. The five Great Lakes (Erie, Ontario, Michigan, Huron, and Superior) are located between Canada and the United States. Michigan is the only Great Lake completely enclosed within the United States. All of the Great Lakes are connected naturally, although the connection between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario is Niagara falls. The natural connections have been enhanced by major construction projects including canals and locks. The St. Lawrence Seaway was a joint Canada-United States project that allows oceangoing shipping into the interior of North America. Ships can travel between the Great Lakes. Since transport by ship is much less costly than by rail, road, or air, the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway have allowed industries to save significant amounts in transportation costs.

The four Great lakes, namely, Lake Erie, Michigan, Ontario and Superior, are situated in the northeastern part of the U.S.A. The Great lakes have provided water for the U.S from the days of the early settlers and now provides the world with abundant fishes which constitute a major part of our diet. They also provide easy shipping to the west and represents the northern border of the U.S.A.(i.e the Canadian border). They are also important as they provide fertile lands for the growth of maize, potato, sugar-beet and fruits and vegetables. Due to the abundance of aquatic fishes and ample food resources the region around the Great Lakes is also densely populated than any other region of the United States of America.

The great lakes have vital role in the environment cycle. The underground water resources are maintained through lakes and other water sources. The water cycle requires the lakes to maintain the natural growth in the area through evaporation of water by sun heat. The fish and other marine life in the lakes is the food for human, birds and animals. The drinking water requirement of all creatures depends on these lakes and other water sources in the area. The lakes are water storage for rain during the year to continue the water cycle.
