Traditionally in rural places, garbage service was not available, so anything unneeded including garbage was burned. Now, service may be available, but it is still a tradition to many families to keep one or two barrels behind the house where garbage and other unwanted and unneeded items such as old clothes, unneeded books, broken toys and games, etc., are dumped. When a barrel gets full, a lit match will dispose of the contents. People still do it because it's cheap, but also tradition. The burning destroys not only garbage but also items that were once useful but no longer are useful. It serves as a reminder of the importance of "letting go" of items when they have crossed the line into being clutter and junk. The burning duty may be a daily occurrence, weeky occurrence or a chore for a designated family member who reaches a certain age of responsibility.
