the lower you go in relation to the top of the atmosphere the larger the column of air is that is pressing down on you. so if you are 3 ft from the edge of the atmosphere you only have 3 ft of air pushing on you but if you are at sea level you have thousands of feet of air pushing down.

for any body, whether its air or water... the pressure increases with depth. that's why you don't see sea divers beyond a particular value of depth and helicopters above a certain value of height.

atmospheric pressure changes as depth changes because the further down you go, the more pressure there is. in other words, the pressure increases as the atmosphere gets deeper. :3

Why does the height of the column in a barometer changes as atmospheric pressure changes?

As the atmospheric pressure changes, the force pushing on the surface of the liquid changes. Therefore, the height of the liquid in the tube increases as the atmospheric pressure increases.

Why does the height of the liquid column in a barometer changes as atmospheric pressure changes?

Pressure tendancies measure short term weather. The mercury in a barometer will rise with atmospheric pressure denoting fairer weather and a fall in barometric pressure warns of inclement weather.

Can a barometer track activity of storms at different altitude?

Highly accurate barometers take atmospheric pressure readings for use in many scientific applications. Changes in atmospheric pressures signal changes in weather, and pressure drops as altitude rises. So, adjusted to its altitude a barometer can track storms at different altitudes.

What is a barrometer?

An apparatus used to measure atmospheric pressure and its weather related changes.

Is sound produced when there are increases in pressure or oscillations in pressure?

The speed of sound does not change with atmospheric pressure. The speed of sound changes with temperature.

What is a mercury barometer used for?

Mercury barometer is used for measuring atmospheric pressure. Because atmospheric pressure changes with distance above or below sea level, a barometer can also be used to measure altitude.

How does air pressure changes altitude increases?

It decreases. Air pressure is simply the pressure of all the other air on top of it. As you increase in elevation, there is less air on top of you. Therefore, the air pressure is less. As your altitude decreases, there is more air on top of you, therefore, the air pressure increases. Same with water. As you descend, water pressure increases. More on top of you.

How changes in altitude affect pressure?

At high altitude the pressure is lower.

Can an odometer be used to determine the altitude of mountains?

An odometer is for distance travelled, not height. You need something sensitive to changes in atmospheric pressure, a barometer, for measuring altitude. Altimeters as fitted to aircraft are in effect barometers.

How do you use the word altimeter in a sentence?

Most altimeters use changes in atmospheric pressure to determine altitude. The altimeter is a crucial tool in air traffic control.
