Bats can fly, and they are mammals. They are also the only mammals capable of free flight.
There are several basic reasons why mammals cannot fly:
- Their bones are heavier than those of birds.
- They do not have wings.
- They do not have the chest muscles necessary to attain the lift needed, even if they did have wings.
