Why can a thought or possibility shatter us and transform us?

Consider R. Descartes "I think therefore I am" philosophy. The mere thought of something, or rather someone thinking, conjures it, and consequently themselves, into existence. Therefore, a thought or even the possibility of a thought in general can transform us into existence or shatter us with the bitterness of reality... J. Shapiro
