No, hot water heaters don't typically have a smell. If you are smelling fumes, you could have a leak in your gas line.
Generally, with that smell- the heater core has gone bad.
i smell gas fumes in 96 Nissan quest
If you smell fumes, you should get out of the room, car, or house. Opening windows will help get rid of the smell.
If the car heat has a fresh air setting, then it could be drawing air from outside of the vehicle. The fumes are most likely coming from a problem under the hood.
Volkswagens are kinda smelly anyway, but if there is a hole in the heater boxes or in the heater ducts leading to the cab, that can significantly increase the exhaust fumes in the cab. Also, if there's an exhaust leak through a rusty muffler, that's a loud, smelly problem.
Your heater core may have a leak in it, allowing the fumes to invade the inside of the vehicle.
Possible leak in gas line. Must be some sort of air leak in the heater box under the hood. Heater is pulling fumes into car through the leak in it.
Breathing fumes from antifreeze cannot be good for your health as antifreeze is poisonous. If you are smelling fumes in your car you probably have a heater core leak. I recommedn you have this repaired ASAP. The only fix for a leaking heater core is to replace it. A very labour intensive job that is quite expensive.
Peas do give off fumes. That's why you can smell them.
The "fumes" are more than likely antifreeze from a leaky heater core.
