Why do computers have both immediate access store and backing store?

Computers work with immediate storage called RAM (Random Access Memory) and longer term storage called ROM.
When a Computer runs an Application, the Computer needs to remember stuff to run the application, such as what the program looks like. This is Graphics Memory, and one example of RAM.

∙ 10y agoRAM - is fast, temporary memory. A hard-drive is slower, but permanent. It's quicker for a computer to 'load' data into RAM, than to leave it on the hard-drive. Aditionally, all data in RAM is lost when the power is switched off. The data on a hard drive stays there until it's wiped by the user.
