I actually learned this the other day in my world history class. The reason is, as cliché as it sounds, is gold and other various resources, such as salt and silver. When these large deposits of valuable resources were discovered, huge trade empires were created, the first of which was Ghana. Many others followed, including the Songhai, also called the Songhay.
Taxes from traders passing through Africa made Ghana very rich.
