Alexander the great started going into India into 326 BC. After winning a pitched battle that went to the wire against a local king Porus who used elephants, Alexander learnt there were many more Kings in India with stronger forces. Alexander wanted to fight.His army didn't. They had been freaked out by elephants. They were exhausted. They had left their home of Macedonia and Greece 8 years ago. They wanted to see their wives and children again. They didn't want to fight more battles against stronger enemies who would probably beat them. They were running low on morale. Alexander tried to persuade his men otherwise, even throwing a tantrum where he stayed in a tent for three days, but his men wouldn't budge. And Alexander the Great was forced to go back.

∙ 8y agoHe was headed into India which he imagined was 'the end of the earth' to the east. He then had plans to go west and take over Western Europe, mistakenly imagining he would then have conquered the whole world. Great ego.
However his soldiers, having been on the warpath for ten years had had enough and wanted to go home and enjoy their spoils. As much as he ranted and raved, they refused to go any further and he had to turn back. It was just as well, as he would have collided with a rising Indian king Chandragupta and 1,000 war elephants who would have overrun and destroyed his army.

They revolted, and he had no option but to turn back.He took his revenge on them in his typical style to those who challenged him, marching them back through the Gedrosian desert where many of them perished.
It was just as well they did turn back, as Chandragupta was moving west in his conquest, had 1,000 war elephants and would have overrun Alexander's relatively small army.
