The United States naturally had to attack Japan after the bombing of Pearl Harbour. The U.S. had been itching to enter WWII for various reasons, but lacked a reason - basically, among other things, Pearl Harbour was the excuse that Roosevelt needed to get into the fight. Atomic bombs were used at Nagasaki and Hiroshima, supposedly, in order to cause an abrupt end to the war to avoid any other damages or casualties (which worked - Japan surrendered a few days later). It also was a move to assert the power of the United States as a militaristic power.

The US was already bombing Japanese cities on a daily basis when the atomic bomb was finally completed in July, 1945. Because Japan continued to fight on despite having no chance to win the war, President Truman decided to use the a-bomb to force a Japanese surrender. The only alternative would be an invasion that would annihilate the Japanese and cost the lives of thousands of US soldiers.

(Other reasons for using the bomb have been suggested. One was to deter the Soviet Union from seeking territorial control of Europe. The other was that no one could be sure exactly what the military effect of the weapon would be, although it would certainly be devastating. The bombing of Japanese cities would make this much clearer.)

Two weapons, one uranium and one plutonium, were completed in late July and sent to Tinian, the B-29 base southwest of Japan. After Hiroshima had been destroyed on August 6, 1945, the Japanese were awed but did not immediately capitulate. The bombing of Nagasaki three days later was followed by a surrender, so although a-bombs continued to be built, no more were used on Japan.
