Well, I think you are referring to the American Revolution. First and foremost, we have to remember that the American Revolution sparked a larger contest between England and France, the Netherlands, Spain, etc. which threatened British interests worldwide. As such, the ability of Britain to focus her energies is largely diminished.

Secondly, the Americans had a country with roughly half the population of the UK separated by an ocean. As such, even though England is much stronger at the time, it is still a difficult proposition to control so much territory against a relatively large foe.

Finally, the French,Spanish & Dutch Republic did provide the US with military assistance.

Also at the time of the Revoloutionary War the British were fighting 3 other wars in diffrent parts of the world at the same time. France was an allie to the US fighting alongside them in the US but Napolean and the French Empire also decided that it would be a perfect time to attack the British over in Europe. The British were also fighting the Mongol Empire ( wich was the 2cnd biggest Empire on earth) and also the Japanese Empire. These 3 other Wars had everything to lose and everything to gain for the British the war with the US had nothing for them to gain as it was too young of a country,so Britain moved on to concentrate on fighting those 3 other wars wich they won all 3.

The American Revolution took place from 1775 to 1783. The Americans were able to defeat the British due to guerrilla fighting tactics, coupled with the fact that the British were not very familiar with the American landscape.

There were several rasons why the American colonists won the revolutionary war. Perhaps the main reason was they were fighting for THEIR land, THEIR homes, THEIR country. This gave them a bit more incentive to win! Also, they didn't have to send clear across the Atlantic for reinforcements as the British did.

There are many reasons, the Americans had these advantages....

The biggest advantage was communications. They didn't have to wait weeks for orders to come across the Atlantic. Certainly knowledge of the immediate area was valuable in the various attacks.

By the time new orders had set sail from Britain to America it was weeks before the orders made it to America and by that time the orders were pointless and out of date.

Also another big advantage was the French, they were crucial to America, they also did most of the work. Americas other allies were the Spanish and the Dutch.

Britain was fighting 3 other major wars at the same time as the Revolutionary War, Napolean and the French Empire,Mongol Empire,Japanese Empire, these 3 other wars had everything to lose and everything to gain for the British Empire, the Revolutionary War didnt have anything for the British Empire to gain as America was to young of a country, so Britain surrenderd, signed the peace treaty, then went on to fight its 3 other major wars, wich the British won.

Also helpfull was the land size of America,Britain had an extremely powerfull military the most powerfull in the world as they had taken over and ruled more of the world than anyone else in history but at the time was very small in man power, they captured and took control of all habours and everything near the water line with its vast Navy and just inside the water line, but they didnt have enough troops to leave there to take control of captured areas and move further inland to capture more land. as soon as they captured land further inland the American citerzens would just reclaim it once the British had moved on,making holding land in the middle of America more difficult.

Another big advantage for America was, in Europe when you captured a countries capital city the War was declared over, the British captured and took North America and New York ,Philadelphia etc etc, but the war just continued regardless.

Also Americas first ever Army was set up during the Revolutionary War and it was led and trained by British troops who had turned on there own country.

NEW ANSWER:

The British had to ship arms and armies over this wide stretch of water, and that was a very expensive undertaking. In the end this distance, as much as anything else, defeated the British.

Distance was also an important factor within the colonies, too. American generals could retreat over a vast, sparsely settled landscape without yielding anything of importance. British armies marched and conquered and found themselves controlling nothing but the soil beneath their feet, while a hostile wilderness closed in behind them.

America didn't fight the way the British expected, most of the population lived outside of the cities and the British supply lines were very vulnerable to sneak attacks which.
