Buddhism was under pressure from other religions: Followers of Mohamed destroyed Buddhist centers of learning in India so that new disciples had no where in the country to go to be taught the Buddha's way, and the Buddha got co-opted into what would come to be known as the Hindu pantheon of gods, as an avatar of Vishnu, with the resulting loss of his revolutionary insights that contradict some of Hinduism.
It was basically due to the fact that Buddhism was no longer patronized by the Brahmins and Kshatriya state rulers as it was during the Emperor Ashoka's dynastic rule and they were often subjected to persecution and massacre by these Hindu rulers. Later on the Arab and central asian invasions did no good to this already extinct religion in India.
Buddhism died out in India for several reasons. The ones most often cited are the effects of the Buddha being co-opted into the pantheon of Hindu gods (where is he now seen as an avatar of Vishnu) and a campaign by Islamic believers to destroy the centers where new disciples could learn from old masters.

Actually, it didn't. Just the opposite happened. For about 200 years Buddhism had a local small following. Then as merchants converted to Buddhism and they traveled to different lands they brought Buddhism with them and then the number of followers grew dramatically.
