Columbus was seeking a sea route to eastern Asia. The only way to reach eastern Asia was either by land, or to travel to the South Atlantic Ocean and travel to the Indian ocean. Both ways took a long time. Therefore Columbus believed he could find a short cut via a sea route.

The Moorish Kingdom of Granada continued for three more centuries in southern Iberia. On 2 January 1492, the leader of the last Muslim stronghold in Granada surrendered to the armies of a recently united Christian Spain (after the marriage of Ferdinand II of Aragón and Isabella I of Castile, the "Catholic Monarchs"). Taken form Wikipedia.

With this knowledge; was it a coincidence that Christopher Columbus was commissioned the same year (1492) to find a new route to an old trading partner? It wasn't because the land route took a long time. C.C. was looking for a new route because the old one was gone. The Silk Road had been captured by Islam and half of the inhabitants along its route had been killed or enslaved.
