What was the cause of Desert Storm?

After a long war between Iraq and Iran, Saddam had depleted the treasury and was looking to replenish the country's bank accounts (which he actually used more often for himself and his family's comforts). He had long tired to claim that Kuwait was actually part of Iraq and it didn't hurt that they were rich in oil, so he invaded.
After the US positioned the armed forces in the Persian Gulf and surrounding countries, President H.W. Bush gave deadlines for the Iraqis to leave Kuwait that came and went. Bush bombed strategic Iraqi targets on January 17, 1991 for 100 days and then sent in ground forces in February. The ground campaign lasted only 100 hours.

Operation Desert Storm was part of the military response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on the 2nd of August 1990 which led to Operation Desert Shield in Saudi Arabia and then the retaking of Kuwait and the invasion of Iraq in Operation Desert Storm.

Saddam Hussein, dictator of Iraq, invaded Iraq's southern neighbor, Kuwait, on August 2, 1990. He claimed it was not an independent nation but rather a rebellious province of Iraq. Kuwait has huge oil reserves, as does Iraq, and the combination put an erratic dictator (Hussein) in charge of a big chunk of the world's oil supply. Worse, it appeared quite possible his armies would keep moving south and capture the huge Saudi Arabian oilfields as well. The US quickly sent rapid-deployment forces to Saudi Arabia to prevent an invasion (this was called Operation Desert Shield). Months went by and Saddam's army remained in Kuwait despite world outrage and numerous UN resolutions. So President Bush began organizing a coalition of Arab and Western forces to liberate Kuwait. Eventually a deadline of January 16, 1991 was issued to Saddam to remove his army from Kuwait. When that deadline passed, Operation Desert Storm began. Kuwait was liberated in late February.

Desert Storm was an offensive operation to defeat Iraqi forces and put an end to their occupation of Kuwait.
