The Egyptians preserved bodies through embalming because the Egyptians believed that there was an "afterlife"(life after death) thus made Egyptians embalm a body. Embalming is another word for mummifying. To mummify a body, Egyptians would first break the nose so they could pull out the brain through the nose with an embalming hook. A neat slit was made on the left side of the abdomen where the liver, intestine, and lung was taken out. The heart was left behind. Then, they would stuff the body with a salt called naton, which would dry out the body. The drying process lasted 40 days. (Lower classes of people would just dry out the body in a desert. This took longer but it still worked.) The body was then stuffed with linen to make the mummy appear "plumper". The they would cover the body in a sticky substance called resin to harden the body. The wrapped in a layer of linen. Then placed amulets. Wrapped another layer of linen. Placed on a death mask, placed in a sarcophagus the a wooden coffin.
