Even with the similarities of these two colonies, the English and Spanish colonies were established for completely different reasons. English colonies were first established by the Puritans in the 1630's who were seeking refuge, freedom of religion, and economic opportunity. Puritans believed that the Church of England was a product of political struggles and of man made doctrines. The Puritans were escaping persecution from the both the Church of England and the King. The Puritans believed that The Bible was God's true law. On the other hand, the Spaniards came to America's on accident in a futile attempt to find an alternate trade route to china, which was led by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Columbus found natives with a thriving community, complex architecture and cities of gold. These precious metals meant major wealth for Spain and their main focus was to conquer and strip the natives of their gold, then return it to Spain.

In the 1500s, the country that controlled what is now considered America was Spain. Spanish explorers like Christopher Columbus, HernΓ‘n CortΓ©s, and Francisco Pizarro played a significant role in the early colonization of the Americas during this time period. They established Spanish colonies in regions such as present-day Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Spain's control over the Americas lasted for several centuries until other European powers, such as England and France, began to establish their own colonies in the region.
