The English, French, Dutch, and Spanish all had about the same goal for sending explorers to the New World. They wanted new economic opportunities and wanted to find other trade routes then the ones they knew of.

The Spanish wanted to establish an easier trade route with China. Instead of finding a direct route to China Columbus sort of bumped into the Americas.

Reports of gold and precious stones brought the Spanish back in force to remove the wealth. They brought with them priests to minister to the colonists and convert the natives to Christianity. As other Spanish realized they could improve their living standards in the new world they immigrated to the New World too.
