NEW ANSWER:

General Robert E. Lee was a great military officer and gentlemen. The people of both the North and South had great admiration and respect for this man, before the American Civil War, as well as after the war came to an end.

President Abraham Lincoln asked Lee to, be the commander of the Union Army. Lee was grateful, and respected Lincoln enough to tell him that he could not fight against his native Virginia. Lincoln understood completely, and wished Lee well. President Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, and General Ulysses S. Grant did not want war.

On April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, Grant and Lee met to finally end the Civil War. Both men were very sad and depressed, because it seemed to be such a waste in the fact that the North and South refused to live in peace.

Grant was sad and depressed, because as I said, he (and the Northerners) had great admiration and respect for Robert E. Lee before and after the American Civil War.

Because it was so emotive watching a fine, noble General brought down in humiliation, yet bearing it bravely.
