Washington decided he was the only man to do the job. He had a uniform made and went to Congress. His argument to Congress was he was the only one with military experience from the French and Indian War ( he was a British officer in the war and really did make a mess of the job) and they should name him General/Commander of the troops. They did and the rest is history.

Additional Note: This happened in 1761.

He had been a colonel in the Virginia militia during the French and Indian War. He had been on General Braddock's staff and had shown great skill and courage in assuming command of that army when Braddock was killed and saving what was left of it. After Braddock's defeat he had become the commander of the Virginia regiment and managed the frontier campaign during the remainder of the war. Thus, limited as this was, he had greater military experience than virtually anybody else in the colonies. On top of that he seems to have had a tremedously compelling personality and commanding presence. Those who worked closely with him, such as the members of the continental congress, could just feel that he was a natural leader. Michael Montagne
